Boozy & Newsy: Bareksten Gin

barekstenIf you need any further proof that most of Europe (and the rest of the world for that matter) has gone completely gin mad, look no further than one of Norway’s contributions to the category, Bareksten. The recipe features 26 different botanicals, 19 of which are locally sourced, bringing a bit of Scandinavian terroir to the spirit. Aside from the juniper and all of the herbal components you’d come to expect from gin, there’s a definite berry-forward component that shines through, as well as some pronounced caraway character that’s perhaps a nod to a spirit more synonymous with the Nordic countries—aquavit (Producer Oss Craft Distillery also makes a 2-year-oak-barrel-aged aquavit with some wonderful baking spice notes). The gin is the brainchild of its namesake distiller, Stig Bareksten (pictured).
