In January, Jamaican rum producer Appleton Estate officially opened the Joy Spence Rum Experience at its distillery in St. Elizabeth, on Jamaica’s south coast. The new visitor center is named for Appleton Estate’s legendary master blender (who makes a brief cameo in this video). I was fortunate enough to be able to escape the cold for a few days and immerse myself in Jamaica’s rum culture. Special thanks to Gruppo Campari, Appleton’s parent company, for making that possible.

New Orleans natives, Gary Solomon, Jr., founder of Solomon Group, with the support of the Solomon Family, and Neal Bodenheimer of Cure and Cane & Table, two of New Orleans’ most beloved bars and restaurants, have entered into a letter of intent to take over Tales of the Cocktail (TOTC), the beverage industry’s premier cocktail and spirits festival.

Chicha de jora, Machu Picchu & high-altitude light-headedness

On the latest episode of “The Drinkable Globe” I go to Machu Picchu and Cusco, Peru in search of chicha de jora, the Incan fermented corn beverage—essentially the Americas’ first beer, long before the Europeans brought their own version.
