Drinkable Week: Another Orphan Barrel bourbon from Diageo, Ole Smoky Moonshine calls the Wolf & Disaronno unveils Riserva

The latest episode of The Drinkable Week is here, with news on the latest bourbon from Orphan Barrel project, Ole Smoky Tennessee moonshine and Disaronno Italian liqueur.

• It’s always a little like Christmas morning when Global spirits mega-giant Diageo releases another whiskey under the Orphan Barrel label. With the latest release, it looks like jolly old Saint Nick is being especially generous. Diageo launched Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Company two years ago to enable the contents of long-forgotten barrels to see the light of day and make whiskey aficionados very very happy. The newest addition to the line is an encore of sorts. It’s Rhetoric 21-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon. It follows last year’s Rhetoric 20 year old. Orphan Barrel plans to release a progressively aged bourbon under the Rhetoric each year, up through 2019, when it’ll unveil a 25 year old offering. Beyond Rhetoric, other trademarks in the Orphan Barrel portfolio have included Barterhouse, Old Blowhard, Lost Prophet and Forged Oak.

• One of the brands leading the modern, legal moonshine craze is Ole Smoky, whose moonshine distillery is quite the attraction in the Smoky Mountain town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This week the distillery introduced the world to Gatlin T. Wolf III, Ole Smoky’s new lupine spokesman. Gatlin will be face of the brand’s “C’Mon, Live A Little” campaign, encouraging legal drinking age adults to do just that. He’s kind of a furrier cousin of Dos Equis’s Most Interesting Man in the World. If you’re wondering, why a wolf? Well, there’s some geographic significance for the new mascot’s species…he’s based on the red wolf that wanders the wilderness of Appalachia.

• You’ve probably seen those jazzy nightlife TV ads for the Disaronno. Well, did you know that the brand was first created waaay back in 1525? The company behind the brand thought 490 years was a long enough time to wait for a new line extension. So, without further ado, the Disaronno is launching its first new product since the renaissance period. Disaronno Riserva is a limited-edition release that’s a combination of the famous Italian liqueur with blended Scotch Whisky. It’s then aged in vintage Marsala wine barrels, adding a bit of spice to the spirit. Disoronno Riserva will be available but will be limited to only 10,000 bottles. If you want one, it’ll cost you $349.
